Star Trek Online on par with WoW?

Many blogs and game writers have talked about Star Trek Online's successes and failures. Some dismissed it, while others praised it. Nontheless, it appears, that Atari's own statistics might prove naysayers wrong.

Just announced, STO went live and had over one million accounts activated. Word gets around fast, and you might see many blogs writing about this before me. We've heard the same story from Age of Conan, we've heard it from Warhammer, and even Aion was part of this, one million accounts benchmark.

It may sound good as of now, seeing this announcement as a PR tactic to hopefully show that their game won't be a flop. However, the real question is, what comes after this? I hate to use WoW as an example(mainly because I'm sure most of us in the MMO field is tired of it), but by far, WoW has been the only MMO, that's able to bring in the crowd, even after release.

Age of Conan drove people away by its buggy game mechanics, and the utter lack of end game content. Much was promised, but none was delivered when it came to the crunch. Warhammer was not spared in this area. On release the game still had some issues and towards the end, end-game became grindy. Aion tried to breakaway from the usual grindfest, but in the end, it reverberated, and everyone ended up grinding again, and then left.

Why am I saying this? Simply because WoW had more or less the same problems when it first launched. On the hind sight, the one thing that probably made its appeal was, players seemed to be able to accept the end-game content. There is nothing new under the sun when Wow released, if you ask me. So what is it that makes WoW such a Behemoth, in the MMO world, you tell me.

That said, I've played STO quite abit, and I'm enjoying it, for now. Missions are easy to follow, space fighting is fun, pimping out your ship, and decking it with a huge variety of weapons encourages you to go out there and shoot down more Klingons, there's a Singaporean community that's quite entertaining, and as long as you don't expect too much, its not hard to love the game. Then again there's a but, what would end-game be like. What happens once we hit the level cap. The game has tons of opportunity for expansion, and its good to see that Cryptic is paying close attention to what STO player's want to see added into the game. I pray the developers do it right in this MMO, or even trekkie's might be disappointed. And trust me, you don't want to disappoint a hardcore trekkie. VULCAN DEATH GRIP KGO!

PS: If you can't get enough of STO, or need some STO love while you're away from the computer, there's a novel based on the MMO coming soon, read up on it here.
